My father’s flight
In September 1944, more than 100,000 people had to leave their homes in Arnhem and region, due to the Battle of Arnhem.
My father was 11 and his baby sister was 1 year old. He had to walk 30 kilometers to the city of Apeldoorn with his sister in a stroller. There they found shelter and had to stay for more than 9 months before they could walk home to their destroyed houses.
Almost 80 years after this event, I walked the same route, which is still there and tried to imagine what he must have experienced during that exodus.
